In preparation for walking it, I go looking for the upper section of the Eichgraben, the closest stream to the Villa Waldberta. I come across what strikes me as being a real enchanted forest. The forest floor is covered with Sphagnum (peat moss) which feels like sponge to walk on. Orangey-brown mushrooms grow up out of it. I pick one that is later identified by my host local artist, Carlotta, as being poisonous. Probably an Inocybe. At night I read about successful programs that have been running throughout Bavarian forests to re-establish Sphagnum.
